A brutal murder has shaken the community of Triolet in Mauritius after Saraswatee Mootia, a 60-year-old woman, was found strangled to death in her plantation on September 18, 2026. According to her son Vedashay, she had left her home at around 7:00 am to tend to her vegetable plantation near the Mediclinic of Triolet. When she failed to return home by 9:00 am, Vedashay grew concerned and went to look for her. He found her lifeless body in the plantation.

The police were informed, and an investigation was launched. The post-mortem examination revealed that Saraswatee Mootia had been strangled to death. The police have identified a suspect through footage from nearby surveillance cameras, which showed an individual lurking around the area before and after the murder. The suspect, who is known to the police for previous aggression cases, was still being sought after at the time of reporting.

The police believe that the murder may be linked to a robbery gone wrong, as Saraswatee Mootia's jewelry, including two rings and an alliance, was missing. This was not the first reported robbery in the area, according to Vedashay, who mentioned that thieves had previously targeted the plantation but only managed to steal small items. The family had not installed security cameras at the site.

Saraswatee Mootia, affectionately known as "Madam Manon," was a pillar of strength for her family. She had been a widow since October 4, 2025, when her husband Sanjay passed away. Despite her tough exterior, she was known for her love and dedication to her family. Her son Vedashay described her as a hardworking woman who would often rise early to tend to her plantation and then sell vegetables.

The victim's family is still reeling from the shock of her death. Vedashay expressed his grief, stating that his mother's passing was a tremendous loss, especially so soon after his father's death. The family had plans to develop their land with Saraswatee Mootia's guidance, but those plans have been abruptly halted.

The community has been deeply affected by the murder, with many expressing their condolences to the family. Saraswatee Mootia was well-liked and respected in her locality, known for her green thumb and her beautiful garden, which included ferns and flowers. Her son Vedashay is counting on the police to bring the perpetrator to justice.

The funeral for Saraswatee Mootia was scheduled to take place on September 20, 2026, at 15:00. The family remains hopeful that the police will apprehend the suspect and bring closure to this tragic event.
