The health authorities of Sao Tome and Principe have issued a high alert for Mpox, a highly contagious and potentially lethal disease, due to its circulation in nearby countries. The population is being advised to take protective measures, including avoiding contact with skin lesions or fluids, frequent handwashing, and calling the emergency number 115 in case of fever, pain, or suspected lesions. This alert comes after notifications of Mpox epidemics in countries with which Sao Tome and Principe has close connections, such as Angola and Portugal.

According to Bakissy Pina, epidemiologist and coordinator of the Public Health Emergency Operations Center, the country's risk assessment has been elevated to a high level due to its fragile health system and frequent flights with affected countries. With three to four weekly flights connecting Sao Tome and Principe to countries with reported Mpox cases, the authorities have deemed it necessary to implement a Contingency Plan to prevent and respond to potential cases.

As part of the Contingency Plan, the health department has strengthened sanitary control at the airport, including temperature checks for all passengers arriving from high-risk countries. If a passenger's temperature is 38 or 39 degrees, they can be detected and isolated at the airport. A dedicated isolation area has been set up for suspected cases. Additionally, samples from suspected cases will be collected and sent to reference laboratories in neighboring countries for diagnosis, as Sao Tome and Principe lacks diagnostic facilities.

Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is characterized by skin eruptions and severe febrile syndrome, which can be transmitted through sexual contact or direct person-to-person contact. The disease can be severe and potentially life-threatening, although most patients recover with supportive care. In severe cases or for high-risk patients, antiviral medication like Tecovirimat (TPOXX) may be used under special protocols.

The health authorities are urging the population to remain vigilant and take preventive measures to avoid the spread of the disease. The emergency number 115 has been set up for people to report suspected cases or seek information. The government is working to raise awareness about Mpox and its prevention, particularly in high-risk areas.

Sao Tome and Principe's health system is considered fragile, making it essential for the authorities to take proactive measures to prevent and respond to potential Mpox cases. The country's experience with other diseases, such as COVID-19, has highlighted the need for robust surveillance and response systems.

The international community is also taking steps to support Sao Tome and Principe in its efforts to prevent and respond to Mpox. Neighboring countries and international organizations are providing technical assistance and resources to help strengthen the country's health system and respond to potential cases.
