On Sunday, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu marked Nigeria's 66th Independence anniversary with a call for hope, healing, and revival. Represented by Secretary to the State Government Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Sanwo-Olu made the remarks at an inter-denominational service in Ikeja. The governor emphasized the need for Nigerians to have faith in their country and work towards a more peaceful and united nation.
Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that Nigeria has faced periods of progress and challenges since gaining independence. However, he expressed optimism about the country's future, citing its ability to endure through adversity. The governor noted that Nigeria's youthful population, human resources, natural wealth, and entrepreneurial energy make it capable of driving national transformation.
The theme of the anniversary service, “A Nation of Hope, Healing and Revival,” reflects the aspirations of Nigerians at present. Sanwo-Olu pointed to developments in Lagos as evidence of what can be achieved through determination, innovation, and collective purpose. He cited investments in transportation, education, healthcare, security, enterprise, and environmental sustainability as examples.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that his administration will continue to invest in Lagos and its people. He believes that the vision of a greater Lagos is connected to the broader aspiration of building a greater Nigeria. The governor urged Nigerians to adopt honest work, responsible citizenship, excellence, compassion, and commitment to the common good.
In addition to prayers for the nation, Sanwo-Olu called on religious institutions and citizens to take concrete actions that promote responsible citizenship and national development. He prayed for peace, unity, justice, and prosperity, and asked God to strengthen the nation's leaders with wisdom, courage, and compassion.
Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence that Nigeria's best chapters are yet to be written and urged citizens to move forward with faith, hope, and courage. He envisioned a Nigeria where every child can fulfill their potential and where the country's diversity serves as a source of strength rather than division.
Sanwo-Olu concluded by declaring his hope for “a new Nigeria” and urging Nigerians to collectively work towards building and enjoying the nation they desire. He wished Nigerians a happy 66th Independence Anniversary and called for continued faith in the country's future.
