SafeBoda, a Ugandan-based startup, aims to make motorcycle taxis and cars safer, more affordable, and convenient across Sub-Saharan Africa. The company is seeking a QA Engineering Lead to take end-to-end ownership of quality across its mobile apps, web applications, and backend services. The successful candidate will be based in Kampala, Uganda. This role requires a senior, hands-on QA leader with experience in automation engineering and team leadership.
The QA Engineering Lead will be responsible for building and owning SafeBoda's test automation strategy, designing, writing, and maintaining automated test suites across all core backend services, mobile applications, and web applications. The candidate will also integrate automated suites into CI/CD pipelines, with coverage reporting that is accurate and actionable. This will involve working closely with cross-functional teams, including PMs, Engineering, and DevOps.
In addition to technical expertise, the QA Engineering Lead will lead and manage a team of QA engineers, setting individual goals, running regular 1:1s, and actively developing the team's automation and structured test-design skills. The candidate will define and enforce QA process standards, including test case documentation, bug triage/severity criteria, release sign-off criteria, and regression scope per release.
The successful candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in QA/software testing, including 2+ years in a lead or senior individual-contributor automation role. They will have hands-on experience building automated test suites from scratch, working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, and experience testing complex, multi-service backend systems. Experience managing or mentoring QA engineers and comfort defining and defending QA metrics/OKRs to non-technical stakeholders are also required.
SafeBoda is looking for a candidate with an automation-first mindset, ownership and accountability, structured communication, coaching and people management skills, and data-driven judgment. The candidate should be able to operate well with incomplete documentation and shifting priorities typical of a fast-moving platform. Prior experience in fintech, ride-hailing, delivery, or another high-transaction-volume consumer platform is a strong plus.
