On November 3, 2026, Dr. Nsengiyumva Justin opened the 26th Exhibition of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in the East African Community at the Gikondo Expo Grounds in Kigali. The exhibition, which started on October 30, 2026, and will conclude on November 8, 2026, aims to promote the development of value chains for leather products, horticulture, and floriculture in the region.
The Prime Minister emphasized that setting high goals and being bold are crucial for SMEs to grow and expand their businesses. He encouraged them to aim high and become wealth creators, with the government providing support to help them achieve this goal. Dr. Nsengiyumva Justin also highlighted Rwanda's commitment to creating 250,000 new jobs annually and increasing exports of non-traditional products, such as horticulture and floriculture, from $1.4 billion to $3.2 billion over the next five years.
The exhibition, which has attracted 1,500 exhibitors from EAC countries and other African countries, provides a platform for SMEs to showcase their products and services, network with potential customers, and access new markets. Dr. Nsengiyumva Justin noted that the exhibition has been a crucial tool for promoting regional integration and economic growth since its inception in 1999.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the challenges faced by SMEs, including access to finance, markets, and customers. He emphasized that the EAC's integration agenda aims to address these challenges by creating a single market and enabling the free movement of goods, services, and people. Dr. Nsengiyumva Justin also highlighted the importance of addressing non-tariff barriers to trade, such as cumbersome customs procedures and inadequate infrastructure.
To address these challenges, Dr. Nsengiyumva Justin proposed several solutions, including the development of modern business infrastructure, the use of technology to facilitate trade, and the expansion of access to finance for SMEs. He also emphasized the importance of regional cooperation and the need for EAC countries to work together to promote economic growth and development.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the potential for growth in the horticulture and leather sectors, noting that these industries offer opportunities for value addition and job creation. He encouraged SMEs to explore these opportunities and to work with the government to develop the necessary infrastructure and support systems.
Dr. Nsengiyumva Justin concluded by emphasizing the importance of regional integration and cooperation in promoting economic growth and development.
