Investors from various parts of Rwanda and abroad have shown interest in Huye District, citing opportunities for investment, particularly in accommodation, as the district faces a significant shortage of lodging. The investors met at the 'Huye Investment Forum' on September 30, 2026, to explore opportunities in constructing accommodation facilities for visitors to Huye and surrounding areas.

Huye District, home to the University of Rwanda, faces a significant accommodation shortage, with the university having over 18,000 students and only two hotels rated four-star, with a combined capacity for 300 guests. During international conferences, attendees often struggle to find accommodation. Kamana Andrée, the district's economic development director, told investors that this presents a significant opportunity for those willing to invest in the area.

Prof. Kayihura Didace Muganga, representing the University of Rwanda, encouraged investors to consider partnering with the university on accommodation projects. He mentioned a university project to build a hotel with four components, including a four-star hotel, two-star hotel, standard hotel, and low-cost accommodation, all within one building.

However, investors expressed concerns about the viability of such projects. Rutayisire François, an investor, noted that building a four-star hotel is expensive and may not yield returns due to high costs and limited clientele. He suggested that constructing standard hotels with affordable rooms could be a more feasible option.

Jean-Guy Afrika, CEO of the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), addressed investors' concerns, emphasizing that there is a need for various types of accommodation, not just four-star hotels. He noted that visitors to Huye, including those traveling to Kibeho in Nyaruguru District, often stay in Huye due to limited options.

Several investors agreed to engage in discussions with Huye District authorities to explore potential partnerships. The investment forum was organized by the RDB and is part of a series of events held in different districts. Huye District currently has a population density of 20.9% and aims to increase this to 35% by 2029.

The district's master plan allocates 8,564 hectares for low-cost housing and other development projects. With the right investments, Huye District aims to address its accommodation shortage and spur economic growth. Key initiatives and collaborations are expected to drive progress in the coming years.
