Dealers of electric vehicles in Rwanda are calling on the public to change their perceptions about electric vehicles, citing their reliability and ability to travel long distances. This comes as some people remain skeptical about the vehicles' performance and durability. The vehicles are gaining popularity due to their eco-friendliness and alignment with current trends.
The Managing Director of KABISA, a leading electric vehicle dealer in Rwanda, Pophia Muhoza, emphasized the need for the public to trust the quality of electric vehicles. Muhoza stated that all vehicles sold by KABISA are brand new, providing customers with more confidence compared to purchasing used fuel or gasoline-powered vehicles. KABISA offers test drives to allow potential customers to experience the vehicles firsthand.
To demonstrate the reliability of electric vehicles, KABISA has conducted extensive testing, including long-distance trips across various countries in Africa. Muhoza mentioned that the company has taken vehicles from Rwanda to Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, showcasing their ability to withstand different conditions. This exercise aimed to address concerns and demonstrate the vehicles' capabilities.
Muhoza highlighted that the Rwandan government has implemented measures to facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles, including tax exemptions. He encouraged the public to support this initiative and transition to modern, eco-friendly vehicles. KABISA offers a range of electric vehicles, including trucks and small cars, with prices ranging from 26 million to 185 million Rwandan francs.
In a move to make electric vehicles more accessible, KABISA has partnered with Rentco to offer leasing options. This collaboration allows customers to rent electric vehicles with insurance, guarantees, and maintenance services provided. The partnership aims to provide flexibility for customers, enabling them to switch vehicles as needed.
Robert K. Nyasimi, Managing Director of Rentco Africa, emphasized the significance of the partnership, citing KABISA's extensive range of electric vehicles suitable for the Rwandan market. He noted that the Rwandan government encourages the adoption of electric vehicles to promote environmental conservation. Rentco will provide financing options and insurance for leased vehicles.
The Rwandan government has implemented measures to promote the adoption of electric vehicles, including a tax exemption on value-added tax for electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. The government aims to increase the tax revenue from to 21.5% by 2035, supporting the implementation of the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2).
