A group of Rwandan celebrities has partnered with the government to promote a sober lifestyle and discourage substance abuse among young people. The initiative, called "Sober Generation," aims to raise awareness about the dangers of excessive drinking and substance abuse. The campaign was launched on September 24 in Musanze, with a four-day event called "Sober Week." The celebrities, including Kenny Nicole Iradukunda Nkusi, also known as Nyabitanga, and Jean Bosco Uwihoreye, known as Ndimbati, are using their fame to spread the message.

Nyabitanga, a popular Rwandan film actor, says that being a celebrity has nothing to do with drinking or using substances. He emphasizes that substance abuse can damage one's reputation and future prospects. "In our line of work, and in today's world, excessive drinking can erode one's confidence and hinder progress," he says. "The arts, film, and other creative fields require clear thinking and focus, which is impossible to achieve while under the influence."

Ndimbati, another prominent figure in the campaign, warns that substance abuse can impair one's judgment and hinder goal achievement. "We are not promoting that we have more intelligence than others, but rather that we use our intelligence to create and innovate," he says. "When one is under the influence, their intelligence is clouded, and they risk making poor decisions that can have negative consequences."

The "Sober Week" campaign is a collaboration between the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion and the Ministry of Sports. The initiative aims to educate parents, youth, and leaders about the dangers of substance abuse, which can destroy families and hinder personal development. The campaign includes various activities, such as discussions, sports, and community service, which will take place in Musanze and Gakenke.

The campaign, called "Irinde Ibiyobyabwenge, Wiheshe Agaciro" or "Stay Sober, Stay Dignified," seeks to engage parents, youth, and leaders in the fight against substance abuse. The organizers believe that by working together, they can prevent the harm caused by substance abuse and promote a healthier and more productive society.

The celebrities involved in the campaign believe that their influence can help shape the attitudes and behaviors of young people. By promoting a sober lifestyle, they hope to inspire a new generation of Rwandans to make positive choices and avoid substance abuse. The campaign is seen as a positive step towards creating a healthier and more responsible society.

The "Sober Generation" initiative is part of a broader effort to address substance abuse in Rwanda. By engaging celebrities and other influential figures, the government hopes to reach a wider audience and promote a culture of sobriety and responsible living.
