The Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS) has appealed to residents of Rwamagana to continue collaborating with authorities to prevent the smuggling of contraband and other unauthorized items into the Rwamagana prison. This appeal was made on October 6, 2026, during a community meeting that brought together local leaders and residents. The meeting aimed to strengthen ties and cooperation between RCS and the local community.

Commissioner General of RCS, CP Theos Badege, emphasized the importance of community involvement in preventing the smuggling of contraband. He noted that despite efforts to curb such activities, some individuals continue to attempt to bring in prohibited items. CP Badege urged residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities, particularly those involving the smuggling of narcotics or other unauthorized items.

According to CP Badege, some individuals have been caught attempting to smuggle marijuana into the prison. He warned that such activities will not be tolerated and urged residents to cooperate with security agencies to prevent them. The RCS also appealed to residents to refrain from damaging or stealing crops grown on prison land, as this affects the prison's operations and the well-being of inmates.

The meeting also addressed the issue of mobile phones being smuggled into the prison. CP Badege reminded residents that inmates are not allowed to possess mobile phones and urged them to report anyone attempting to bring them into the prison. Local leaders also emphasized the importance of community involvement in maintaining prison security.

The Deputy Mayor of Rwamagana, Umutoni Jeanne, highlighted the importance of cooperation between residents and prison authorities. She noted that the prison is a vital institution that benefits the local community and urged residents to take an active role in maintaining its security. Umutoni also emphasized that residents have a vested interest in ensuring the prison's smooth operation.

The Rwamagana prison has been involved in various community development projects, including providing assistance to residents in need. The prison has helped build homes for residents and provided medical insurance to 190 vulnerable individuals. Local leaders emphasized that such initiatives demonstrate the prison's commitment to the community and urged residents to reciprocate by supporting prison security efforts.

Residents who attended the meeting welcomed the initiative and pledged to cooperate with authorities to prevent contraband smuggling. One resident, Mukankundimfura Dative, noted that the meeting had helped raise awareness about the importance of community involvement in maintaining prison security.
