The Higher Education Council (HEC) of Rwanda has called on religious leaders to pursue theological studies to address existing challenges in their operations. According to HEC, having a theological background will enable them to perform better and make informed decisions. This was stated during the 14th graduation ceremony of the Protestant University of Rwanda (PUR), where 1,114 students received diplomas in various fields, including theology.
The HEC emphasizes that religious leaders and teachers must have theological knowledge to improve their performance and provide informed teachings. This move aims to reduce misleading teachings and promote sound doctrine. Dr. Théoneste Ndikubwimana, Director of the HEC's Higher Education Quality Assurance Department, highlighted the importance of theological studies in enhancing the quality of teachings.
The HEC's directive aligns with regulations requiring religious organizations to have leaders with theological qualifications. To meet these requirements, leaders must hold a bachelor's degree in theology or a related field, or a university diploma with a recognized theological certification. These regulations aim to promote good governance and improve the performance of faith-based organizations.
Some graduates of PUR's theology program have expressed their appreciation for the knowledge gained, which they believe will enhance their performance and inform their teachings. Dozita Uwizeyimana, a graduate, stated that the knowledge acquired will help him provide informed teachings and avoid spreading misinformation.
Another graduate, Anicet Kabalisa, emphasized that theological studies have equipped him with the skills to lead effectively, avoid mistakes, and contribute to resolving issues within his faith community. He believes that this knowledge will enable him to provide guidance and find solutions to problems.
Professor Viateur Habarurema, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs at PUR, noted that the theological education provided aims to empower students to contribute to nation-building and promote the well-being of citizens. He emphasized that this knowledge will enable graduates to address various challenges and provide informed teachings.
The HEC's initiative encourages religious leaders to pursue theological studies to improve their performance and promote sound doctrine. With over 1,100 students graduating with theological qualifications, this move is expected to have a positive impact on the country's faith communities.
