Rwandan Deputy Damien Mazimpaka has proposed that the government explore ways to increase investment in the processing of bananas to produce high-quality beverages. He noted that while the country has an abundance of bananas, the market is dominated by imported drinks such as Fanta, and local banana-based products are scarce. Mazimpaka expressed concern that despite the country's rich banana harvest, there is a lack of locally produced banana juice and wine that meets international standards.
Mazimpaka cited the example of the OBIVAR factory, which previously operated in the country, and suggested that a similar or revamped facility could be established to process bananas and provide a market for local farmers. He urged the government to support the construction or rehabilitation of such a facility to ensure that farmers have a reliable outlet for their produce when commercial industries are unable to purchase it.
The Minister of Industry and Trade, Marie-Antoine Kajangwe, acknowledged that some factories producing banana-based beverages had been shut down due to non-compliance with quality standards. Kajangwe attributed the problem to weaknesses in the quality control system, citing instances where inspectors focused on the appearance of factories and equipment but failed to monitor their actual use.
Kajangwe explained that some factories had been found to possess the necessary equipment and infrastructure but did not use them properly to produce high-quality products. He promised that his ministry, in collaboration with other relevant agencies, would develop regulations to ensure that banana-based beverages meet quality standards and provide a reliable market for local farmers.
The Minister welcomed Mazimpaka's proposal to invest in a large-scale banana processing facility, saying it could help address the challenges facing the industry. Kajangwe noted that such an investment could provide a solution to the marketing problems faced by local farmers and enable them to benefit from their produce.
Despite the optimism, lawmakers emphasized the need for urgent action to prevent further losses for farmers and investors and ensure that quality standards are maintained. They stressed that the country's banana harvest is at risk of going to waste, and swift solutions are required to support the industry.
The government has pledged to work on finding a solution to the challenges facing Rwanda's banana juice and wine industry. With the right investment and regulations, the country aims to unlock the potential of its banana harvest and provide a reliable market for local farmers.
