The 26th EAC International Exhibition for small and medium enterprises kicked off in Kigali, Rwanda, with the country's Prime Minister, Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva, as the chief guest. The event, which is being held at Gikondo, brings together entrepreneurs from member states of the East African Community (EAC). The exhibition aims to provide a platform for small and medium enterprises to showcase their products and services, explore new markets, and expand cross-border trade.
This year's theme, "Advancing Regional Value Chain in Leather and Horticulture," focuses on promoting value addition in the leather and horticulture sectors. The choice of these sectors is driven by their economic potential in the region. The EAC reports that in 2017, the regional market demanded 130 million pairs of shoes, which increased to nearly 290 million pairs by 2024. Despite this growth, local production stood at only 17 million pairs in 2024.
The EAC projects that by 2030, the shoe market could require up to 385 million pairs, presenting significant opportunities for investors and small and medium enterprises to invest in leather processing, shoe manufacturing, and other leather products. The horticulture sector also plays a crucial role in the regional economy, contributing over 25% to the EAC's GDP. The exhibition provides a platform for stakeholders to network, identify new market opportunities, and explore partnerships.
The event is not just about showcasing products but also about creating an environment for entrepreneurs, investors, government officials, researchers, and partners to interact. Small and medium enterprises can find new partners, learn about market opportunities in other countries, share knowledge, and identify ways to expand their operations. This initiative is critical in promoting regional production, reducing dependence on imported goods, and enhancing the EAC's capacity for intra-regional trade.
Hosting the exhibition is an opportunity for Rwanda to reaffirm its commitment to supporting business, investment, and cooperation in the EAC region. The EAC comprises eight member states: Rwanda, Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Somalia. The exhibition will provide a platform for Rwandan entrepreneurs to engage with regional and international partners.
The exhibition has attracted entrepreneurs from EAC member states, who will showcase their products and services, including leather goods, horticultural products, and other innovative items. The event is expected to facilitate partnerships, trade, and investment in the region, ultimately contributing to economic growth and development.
The EAC exhibition will run for several days, providing ample opportunities for stakeholders to engage, network, and explore new business opportunities. The event is a significant milestone in promoting regional economic integration and cooperation among EAC member states.
