The Rwandan government has announced the appointment of Claudette Mukashyaka as the new Auditor General. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by President Paul Kagame on October 26, 2026. Mukashyaka brings extensive experience in auditing and economics to her new role, having served as the Chief Executive Officer in charge of Internal Audit at I&M Bank Rwanda since 2021.

Claudette Mukashyaka holds a second-degree master's in economics from the University of Rwanda, where she graduated with honors. Additionally, she has served as an external auditor at the Office of the Auditor General. Her expertise in auditing and economic matters makes her well-suited for her new position. Mukashyaka replaces Alexis Kamuhire, who had been serving as Auditor General since October 2021, succeeding Obadiah Biraro who served for ten years.

Alexis Kamuhire served two terms as Auditor General before being replaced by Mukashyaka. In addition to Mukashyaka's appointment, the cabinet also appointed Kubwimana Gratien as the Deputy Auditor General. Gratien previously served as the Chief Executive Officer in charge of Governance, Projects, and Specialized Audit at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning since 2024.

Kubwimana Gratien holds a third-degree master's in economics and a second-degree master's in business project management. He is also a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Rwanda (ICPAR). Gratien has experience working in various auditing roles, including as an internal auditor and economist in different government institutions.

The cabinet meeting also made appointments to the National Commission for Human Rights. Nyiragwaneza Athanasie, Bangayandusha Viateur, and Umutoni Aissa were appointed as commissioners. These appointments aim to strengthen the country's human rights oversight and auditing mechanisms.

Claudette Mukashyaka and Kubwimana Gratien will play crucial roles in ensuring transparency and accountability in Rwanda's public financial management. The new Auditor General and Deputy Auditor General will oversee auditing and financial reporting across government institutions.
