On October 6, 2026, the governments of Rwanda and Kenya signed 11 cooperation agreements in different areas to enhance their bilateral relations. The agreements were signed after the 10th session of the Rwanda-Kenya Joint Commission, which took place in Nairobi on October 5-6, 2026. The Rwandan delegation was led by Dr. Usta Kaitesi, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

The agreements cover areas such as legal assistance and extradition, political consultations, immigration and emigration, urbanization and city development, and cooperation with diaspora communities. They also include water and irrigation management, local government, cooperation between the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) and the Kenya Police, cultural exchange and heritage conservation, and biodiversity conservation.

The agreements aim to strengthen the existing cooperation between Rwanda and Kenya in areas such as diplomacy, security and defense, education, trade, investment, transportation, and logistics. The two countries have a long-standing relationship, and these new agreements are expected to further enhance their bilateral ties.

During the joint commission, both parties expressed satisfaction with the progress made in implementing agreements from the previous session, which was held in Kigali. They urged relevant authorities to expedite the implementation of pending agreements and conclude ongoing negotiations.

Dr. Kaitesi highlighted the significance of Kenya as a key partner for Rwanda in trade, citing that in 2025, Rwanda imported goods worth over $398 million from Kenya, while exporting goods worth $5.3 million. He emphasized that trade is a crucial pillar of their economic relationship, and the two countries are committed to promoting economic integration in the region through the East African Community.

The agreements were signed by high-ranking officials from both countries, including Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora. The cooperation agreements reflect the commitment of Rwanda and Kenya to strengthening their bilateral relations and promoting regional integration.

The signing of these agreements is expected to have a positive impact on the economic and social development of both countries, and to enhance their cooperation in various sectors. The two countries will work together to implement the agreements and promote their bilateral relations.
