President William Ruto of Kenya has announced that the Raila Odinga International Stadium at Talanta Sports City in Nairobi will officially open on January 5, 2027. The inaugural match will feature European football giants Bayern Munich and Ajax, marking the first time these teams will play in Kenya. The stadium, designed to accommodate 60,000 spectators, is a key part of Kenya's sports infrastructure development ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Talanta Sports City Stadium is fully compliant with FIFA and CAF Category 4 standards, incorporating advanced technology such as VAR and goal-line technology, and 52 luxury hospitality skyboxes. The project, valued at approximately Sh45.85 billion, is being implemented by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and is expected to play a central role in Kenya's preparations for AFCON 2027. The stadium's design features a football-inspired exterior with traditional Maasai shields and spears reflected in architectural features.

President Ruto highlighted that the match will be delivered through corporate partnerships and a self-sustaining commercial model, demonstrating that world-class sports can attract private investment and create lasting opportunities. The stadium's construction began on March 1, 2024, and has entered its final phase, with mechanical and electrical installations, dressing rooms, and interior finishes nearing completion.

The Talanta Hela initiative, which seeks to develop talent and expand opportunities in the creative and sporting industries, supports the stadium project. The facility will host rugby HSBC World Rugby Sevens Challenger matches before fully anchoring the AFCON tournament later in the year. Its hybrid GrassMaster playing surface is designed for professional sporting events.

The stadium features advanced broadcast infrastructure, provisions for video assistant referee (VAR) and goal-line technology, and dynamic LED lighting. The wider complex includes three training pitches, one with a 1,500-seat grandstand. The project is part of the government's efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure in Kenya.

The increase in project cost from an initial Sh35 billion to Sh45.85 billion has been attributed to additional costs, including taxes, freight, and clearing charges. The Ministry of Sports is overseeing the project's execution, which involves the Kenya Defence Forces' Engineering Department.

Beyond AFCON, the new venue is expected to expand Kenya's capacity to host high-profile football and rugby events. Bayern Munich and Ajax have confirmed their participation in the historic friendly match at Talanta Stadium, marking a significant milestone for Kenyan sports.
