A devastating drone attack on a Ukrainian train station has resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people, with 14 others wounded, including an 11-year-old boy. The attack occurred at the main railway station in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro, where a passenger train was preparing to depart for the southern city of Zaporizhzhia. Ukrainian authorities have sealed off the site and are investigating the incident.

According to Dnipropetrovsk regional head Oleksandr Hanzha, the attack was carried out by a Russian jet-powered drone that hit a crowded platform at the station. Ukraine's state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, confirmed that the drone strike occurred when a passenger train was at one of the platforms. Russia's military has not publicly commented on the incident, despite repeatedly hitting Ukraine's large railway network and denying deliberate targeting of civilians.

The attack on Dnipro's train station has been condemned by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who called for further US, European, and G7 sanctions on Russia. Zelensky also criticized a recent deal between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin that eased some sanctions on Moscow. The incident has prompted an elevated threat level in the region, with Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov describing it as a tragedy.

The drone attack on Dnipro is part of a wider assault on Ukraine's infrastructure, with attacks on railway facilities rising sharply. According to statistics released by Ukrzaliznytsia, almost 60% of the 521 locomotives hit since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 have been hit this year. Overall attacks on railway facilities have risen from 1,206 in 2025 to 1,700 so far this year.

The incident in Dnipro is not an isolated event, as other parts of Ukraine have also been affected by Russian attacks. In the city of Chernihiv, two girls aged 15 were killed in a Russian missile attack, with at least 25 others injured. A day of mourning has been declared for Chernihiv and Dnipro on Friday. Additionally, three people were killed and 28 injured in a Russian drone attack on residential buildings and a school in the city of Kremenchuk.

The Russian strikes have prompted condemnation from the Ukrainian government and international community. Ukraine's human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, reported that a fragile ceasefire in the besieged city of Oleshky was holding into a third day. Meanwhile, the Kremlin has condemned Ukrainian drone attacks on Moscow, which is hosting the Russia-Africa Summit.

The international community has been urged to take action against Russia's continued aggression. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for increased sanctions, while the US and European countries have imposed sanctions on Russia's defence ministry. The situation in Ukraine remains volatile, with ongoing attacks on civilian infrastructure and rising casualties.
