The former National Vice Chairman of the Labour Party in the South-South, Favour Reuben, has stated that the Rivers State Labour Party structure is not part of the proposed Rainbow Coalition. Reuben, also the National Chairman of the South-South Democratic Movement, made this clarification in an interview. He emphasized that the party structure in Rivers State was not consulted on the matter. Reuben's statement comes amid discussions among opposition parties and political groups ahead of the 2027 elections.
Reuben expressed concerns about the opposition's preparedness for the 2027 elections. He noted that while discussions about a coalition are ongoing, many opposition parties are yet to build strong structures at the grassroots level. According to Reuben, politics is not won by making noise in Abuja or being active on social media. Instead, he stressed the need for opposition parties to build structures from the polling unit to the ward, local government, and state levels.
The former Labour Party zonal chairman highlighted the importance of having a strong grassroots presence. He pointed out that popularity is not enough to guarantee electoral success. Reuben cited the 2023 election experience, where coordinated grassroots mobilisation achieved significant results. He urged opposition parties to demonstrate their structures on the ground, adding that they need people who are committed to the party in every ward and polling unit.
Reuben also criticised the focus on social media and Abuja-based politics. He argued that opposition parties need to go beyond criticism and tell Nigerians what they will do differently. According to Reuben, the opposition needs a clear message that people can understand. He suggested that parties should explain their strategies on issues like unemployment, insecurity, and the economy.
The Labour Party structure in Rivers State, as represented by Reuben, has not been part of the Rainbow Coalition from the beginning. Reuben stated that nobody consulted the party structure, and no meeting was held to discuss the coalition. He emphasized that if the party is to be part of a coalition, its structure must be consulted, and its stake, candidates, and message must be discussed.
Reuben raised concerns about some individuals presenting themselves as Labour Party representatives in the coalition. He noted that these individuals may not necessarily understand the party's political structure. Reuben attributed this to a crisis within the party after the 2023 election, which created factions. He stressed that the political party and the labour union are different structures with their own constitutions, processes, and structures.
Reuben denied that his opposition to the Rainbow Coalition is connected to his strained relationship with former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike. He stated that he has supported Wike politically for a long time. However, Reuben maintained that his concerns about the coalition are based on the party's structure and the need for consultation.
