A public toilet in Musanze, Rwanda, has fallen into disrepair, prompting concerns from residents about its impact on public health. The toilet, which was previously a market, has been in use by nearby residents, including those with bars and restaurants, as well as passersby. However, it has become outdated, with damaged roofs and broken drainage systems, leading to unsanitary conditions.

The toilet's condition has resulted in a strong stench and potential health risks for those living in the area. Residents have expressed frustration, citing the lack of maintenance and inadequate waste management. Mbarushimana Philippe, a local resident, shared his experience working with a company, MZ, that previously managed the toilet's cleaning, but had issues with payment.

Residents are urging authorities to take action to address the situation. Philippe stated that some individuals had offered to help with cleaning, but the effort was hindered by a lack of support from those who use the toilet. He also mentioned that a local resident, Rwema, had previously contributed to the cleaning efforts but had stopped due to the lack of assistance from others.

The situation has been further complicated by the presence of bars and restaurants in the area, which have been using the toilet but are not contributing to its maintenance. Residents are concerned about the potential health risks, particularly for children who play in the area. They are calling for the toilet to be closed and renovated, with a designated caretaker to ensure its upkeep.

Nsabimana Jean de Dieu, another local resident, expressed similar concerns, stating that the toilet's condition is a health hazard. He suggested that the toilet should be closed until it can be properly maintained. The residents' concerns highlight the need for effective waste management and sanitation in the area.

According to Manzi Jean Pierre, the secretary general of the Busogo sector, authorities have been urged to close the toilet. He stated that efforts have been made to address the issue, including requesting that those operating nearby businesses contribute to the toilet's maintenance. However, the problem persists, and residents are calling for more decisive action.

The lack of proper sanitation facilities in Musanze is a broader issue, with some residents forced to use makeshift toilets, potentially spreading diseases. The situation highlights the need for investment in sanitation infrastructure and effective waste management to prevent the spread of diseases and promote public health.
