Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has directed the immediate replacement of the contractor assigned to the Sh 114 million Kaguku Modern Market in Murang'a County. The contractor, appointed by the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, failed to meet completion deadlines, leaving local traders waiting for a modern trading space. Kindiki inspected the facility and noted the contractor had fallen severely behind schedule.

Kindiki addressed residents at the site, directing Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome to terminate the current contract and bring in a new firm without delay. He stated that a new contractor should be on site by Monday to ensure the market programme is completed, providing traders with a decent working environment after years of waiting. The Deputy President emphasized the need for timely completion of the project.

The Deputy President highlighted ongoing national government projects in Murang'a County, including road infrastructure, student hostels across eight tertiary institutions, 27 modern markets, and 1,910 affordable housing units. These projects aim to improve the living standards of residents in the county. Kindiki's visit showcased the government's efforts to develop the region.

Kindiki also warned politicians against interfering with multi-agency operations aimed at curbing illicit alcohol. The operations, led by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), and the National Police Service, aim to eradicate the problem. He urged politicians to focus on development programmes and allow the relevant authorities to deal with the issue.

Lands CS Alice Wahome criticized Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata for distancing himself from the ruling coalition, signaling potential political realignments ahead of the next election cycle. Wahome hinted at her own political ambitions, citing health sector challenges in lower Murang'a that require urgent intervention. Her comments suggest growing tensions within the county's political landscape.

Murang'a Woman Representative Betty Maina urged the government to thoroughly vet contractors before awarding multiple tenders to prevent overcapacity and delays. She also called on law enforcement to strictly prosecute individuals involved in sexual violence against minors. Maina emphasized the need for continuous inspection of development projects to ensure their completion within schedule.

The Deputy President was accompanied by several regional leaders, including Kangema MP Peter Kihungi, Maragua MP Mary Wamaua, and Nominated MP Sabina Chege. The lawmakers defended their alignment with the national government, stating it allows them to lobby effectively for Murang'a's development agenda. The visit demonstrated the government's commitment to developing the region and addressing local concerns.
