The Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Unyime Idem, has delivered 60 units of solar-powered street lights to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, for installation at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo. This project is expected to improve security and visibility around the Press Centre at night. The items were delivered to the Union on Monday by Idem’s Special Assistant on General Duties, Ediong Charles.
The delivery of the solar-powered street lights is in fulfilment of a commitment made by Rep. Idem to the NUJ about two months ago. Charles said the gesture was part of Idem’s efforts to support initiatives aimed at improving the working environment and welfare of journalists in Akwa Ibom State. The NUJ Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, received the items on behalf of the Union.
Comrade Nsibiet John commended Rep. Idem for fulfilling his promise made during the 2025 electioneering that the Press Centre would be illuminated if Idem was elected. John said the installation of the solar-powered lights would improve visibility and security around the Press Centre, particularly at night, while making the facility more accessible to journalists, media workers and visitors after working hours.
The NUJ Chairman said the gesture is significant because it is not just about providing lights; it is about improving the safety and working environment of journalists who use the Press Centre, especially at night. He added that the Union would maintain a cordial relationship with Rep. Idem and continue to support initiatives that advance journalism and the welfare of media practitioners in the state.
Also present during the handover were the Secretary of the State Council, Nsikak Esenowo; Financial Secretary, Kufre Emmanuel; Auditor, Dianime Uko; Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Emmanuel Akpan; Chairman of the Press Centre Management Committee, Edifon Solomon; and a member of the Union, Simeon Akwa.
According to the Chairman, installation of the solar-powered street lights is expected to commence immediately. The project is a significant development for the NUJ Press Centre, which serves as a critical hub for journalists and media practitioners in Akwa Ibom State. The solar-powered street lights will provide a reliable source of light, enhancing the overall security and functionality of the Press Centre.
