The academic community in Mauritius is in mourning following the death of Professor Vinesh Y. Hookoomsing, a distinguished linguist and champion of the Kreol Morisien (KM) language, on September 30 at the age of 78. As a respected figure in Mauritian academia and culture, Hookoomsing dedicated his life to higher education, research, and promoting the importance of languages, education, and national identity.
Hookoomsing's impressive academic career included serving as Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University of Mauritius (UoM), where he was responsible for research, consultancy, and publications. He also headed the Language Institute project at the university before retiring in May 2008. His work extended beyond the university walls, as he was deeply committed to sharing knowledge and fostering debate.
One of Hookoomsing's most significant contributions was in the development of a standardized orthography for the Kreol Morisien language. In 2004, he led the effort, in collaboration with the University of Mauritius and the Mauritius Institute of Education, to create the Grafi-larmoni, a crucial step in structuring and standardizing the language.
As the founding president of the Akademi Kreol Morisien, Hookoomsing tirelessly advocated for the greater integration of KM in education, research, and written production. He envisioned Kreol Morisien as more than a spoken language, but as an essential element of Mauritian heritage and identity, and a unifying force for the nation.
Hookoomsing's influence extended to future generations of scholars, including Professor Arnaud Carpooran, who credited Hookoomsing as his first KM teacher. His dedication to promoting KM was nationally recognized in 2023 when he was elevated to Grand Officer of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.
Hookoomsing's legacy will be remembered through his family, particularly his son Yan Hookoomsing, who is among those paying their respects. His funeral service will take place on October 3, with his remains being exposed at the Elie & Sons funeral home in Beau-Bassin on October 2.
The Mauritian community is coming together to bid farewell to a man whose life was marked by a passion for knowledge, sharing, and commitment. As the nation mourns the loss of this remarkable individual, his contributions to the Kreol Morisien language and Mauritian culture will continue to inspire future generations.
