The Latitude59 Kenya Pitch Competition has attracted a record 509 applications from startups across 25 countries, showcasing the growing interest in Africa's tech ecosystem. This year's submissions represent a significant increase from the previous year, highlighting the competition's expanding reach across the continent. The surge in applications demonstrates the potential and innovation within Africa's startup landscape.

The competition will select 10 finalists to pitch at the Latitude59 Kenya Edition 2026, scheduled for December 3–4 in Nairobi. According to Krista Meinarde, Latitude59's Head of Investor-Startup Relations, e-commerce and retail startups account for the largest share of applications. Fintech, agritech, foodtech, and artificial intelligence companies also have a strong representation among the submissions, indicating a diverse range of industries and technologies.

Notably, 43% of the applicants are already generating monthly revenue, demonstrating commercial traction among this year's applicants. Although most startups are at an early stage, the revenue-generating applicants highlight the potential for growth and scalability. The competition's focus on early-stage startups provides a platform for entrepreneurs to access funding, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

Kenya accounts for approximately two-thirds of all applications from Africa, with the remaining submissions coming from East, West, and Southern Africa, as well as Central and North Africa. The geographic diversity of applicants underscores the competition's appeal across the continent. The event will bring together African founders, international investors, and companies seeking opportunities across African and global markets.

The 10 selected finalists will receive professional pitch training and mentorship before competing for prizes provided by Latitude59's partners. One winning startup will also receive an invitation to attend Latitude59 2027 in Tallinn, Estonia, with travel expenses covered by the organisers. This additional opportunity will enable the winning startup to expand its network and access new markets.

The December 3–4 event will mark the fourth Latitude59 edition held in Kenya. The first day will focus on investor activities and side events, while the main conference and pitch competition finals will take place on December 4. Organisers expect a similar turnout to last year's edition, which attracted approximately 2,000 participants, including around 600 investors from Africa, Europe, the Nordic countries, and Asia.

The event's expected turnout and the number of applications demonstrate the growing interest in Africa's tech ecosystem. With a strong lineup of applicants, investors, and industry experts, the Latitude59 Kenya Pitch Competition is poised to be a significant event in Africa's startup calendar. The competition's focus on supporting early-stage startups and promoting innovation will likely have a lasting impact on the continent's tech landscape.
