The Gauteng Health Department has launched a new R45 million Emergency Department at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital in Johannesburg. This development aims to enhance emergency care services for women, children, and families. The department has invested significantly in this project to address growing healthcare demands in the area. The new emergency ward is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to provide safe and dignified care.
The newly built unit features 13 beds, a nursing station, a procedure room, and an isolation cubicle. A significant addition to this department is the specialised counselling room and South African Police Service (SAPS) office for GBV survivors. This will enable survivors to receive comprehensive care and support. The provincial health department has also ensured secure storage for forensic evidence, highlighting its commitment to addressing GBV cases.
According to Dr Arthur Manning, Chief Executive Officer, the upgrade will ensure that women, children, and families continue to receive safe, dignified, and high-quality emergency care when they need it most. The spatial planning of the hospital has been designed to support infection prevention while still supporting the daily demands of emergency care within the area. This development demonstrates the department's focus on providing quality healthcare services.
The new unit was built by the FirstRand Empowerment Foundation and the First and SPIRE Fund in an attempt to meet growing health care demands. The department said that while the project was in progress, skills development and employment opportunities were provided for up to 70 members of the surrounding community. This initiative not only improves healthcare infrastructure but also contributes to local economic development.
The Emergency Department's expansion is a significant step towards addressing the healthcare needs of the community. With a dedicated unit for GBV survivors, the hospital is now better equipped to provide specialised care and support. The counselling room and SAPS office will facilitate collaboration between healthcare providers and law enforcement agencies to ensure that survivors receive comprehensive care.
The Gauteng Health Department's investment in this project demonstrates its commitment to improving healthcare services in the province. The new emergency ward is a welcome development for the community, which will benefit from enhanced emergency care services. The department's focus on infection prevention and quality care ensures that patients receive the best possible treatment.
The launch of the new Emergency Department at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital is a significant milestone in the province's healthcare development.
