Professor Nnamdi Umeoduagu, the Vice-Chancellor of Tansian University in Anambra State, Nigeria, has passed away just hours after being sworn in as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the private institution. According to the university's Chief Press Secretary, Fidelis Nwakwesili, Professor Umeoduagu was inaugurated on Friday, October 2, and died on Saturday, October 3. The cause of his death is currently under investigation.
The university's management has clarified that reports suggesting Professor Umeoduagu served as acting Vice-Chancellor for only two days before his death were inaccurate. Chief Press Secretary Nwakwesili stated that Professor Umeoduagu had been authorized to act as Vice-Chancellor before his recent appointment as substantive Vice-Chancellor. He served in an acting capacity for approximately two months, beginning from when the substantive Vice-Chancellor, Eugene Nwadialor, proceeded on medical leave until the expiration of Nwadialor's tenure on September 30, 2026.
The management of Tansian University has established a five-member investigative committee to determine the cause of Professor Umeoduagu's sudden death. The Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, E.S.C. Obiorah, announced this during a board meeting on Monday. The committee has been given 48 hours to submit its action plan, which includes defining the university's involvement in funeral arrangements and reviewing the upcoming autopsy report.
During the board meeting, Chancellor Obiorah praised Professor Umeoduagu's brief but impactful administration and announced plans to erect a memorial in his honor. Obiorah described the late Vice-Chancellor as a "hero and a fine scholar" who fought bravely for the institution. He noted that while Professor Umeoduagu's death was sudden, negligence might have played a role in the circumstances surrounding his passing.
The Pro-Chancellor of Tansian University, Ellis Idemobi, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Security), Anthony Ngonadi, have expressed shock and sadness over Professor Umeoduagu's death. Idemobi pointed to external variables contributing to the sudden demise and stated that he remains optimistic that medical examinations will unravel the mystery behind the death. The university's Bursar, Valentine Ikeanyionwu, also expressed profound shock over the tragedy.
The university management has announced a two-week period of mourning in honor of the deceased Vice-Chancellor. Academic activities have been postponed as part of measures to mourn and honor Professor Umeoduagu. The university flag will also be lowered throughout the mourning period as a mark of respect for the late academic. The management has appealed to Nigerians and the media to respect the privacy and dignity of the bereaved family and the university community.
A condolence visit was led by Professor Idemobi to the family of the deceased official, where he described Professor Umeoduagu as an outstanding scholar and a visionary leader who guided the institution through critical times with unwavering commitment.
