In a remarkable display of commitment to improving healthcare in Bauchi state, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, Nigeria's Minister for Health and Social Welfare, has within the last three months, visited Bauchi three times to commission multi-billion-naira health facilities and equipment. This has turned Bauchi into a hub for healthcare delivery, attracting patients from neighboring states for medical diagnostics and treatment.

On October 5, 2026, Prof. Pate, alongside Minister for Finance, Mr. Taiwo Ayodele, commissioned a radiodiagnostic and cancer treatment centre in Bauchi, under the Medical and Diagnostic Infrastructure Initiative, with the involvement of the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA). This project is one of nine similar initiatives across the country, including at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina, and University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Nsukka.

On July 4, 2026, Prof. Pate was in Bauchi to commission a N10 billion healthcare intervention, providing essential drugs, maternal kits, ambulances, and medical equipment to 20 primary healthcare centres across 15 local governments. The intervention included 17,000 free maternity kits for pregnant women, suction machines, oxygen concentrators, blood pressure monitors, and newborn care equipment, aimed at easing the financial burden on expectant mothers.

Earlier, on September 18, 2026, Prof. Pate commissioned and deployed modern ambulances to Toro General Hospital, Gamawa General Hospital, the National Obstetric and Fistula Centre in Ningi, and ATBUTH (Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital) in Bauchi. The ATBUTH was also designated a national hospital, with a new site provided for its upgrade and commissioning, and work on the site has commenced.

In a move to improve healthcare at the grassroots level, the specialist hospital in Misau was commissioned as a Federal Medical Centre on August 5, 2024. Plans are underway to commission the specialist hospital in Alkaleri Local Government as a Federal Medical Centre, deploying more federal healthcare expertise and equipment to communities east of the Bauchi metropolis, bordering Gombe State.

Furthermore, the specialist hospital in Azare LGA, converted to a Teaching Hospital for the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Azare, has been equipped and commissioned. The ATBUTH has undergone upgrades, including the commissioning of a Clinical Trials and Special Diagnostics Centre, showcasing Prof. Pate's sustained commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure in Bauchi.

Prof. Pate's investments in Bauchi's healthcare sector date back to 2014, during his short stint as Minister of State for Health, when he established the National Obstetric and Fistula Centre in Ningi to consolidate research, prevention, and treatment of obstetric fistula. With these recent developments, Bauchi is poised to become a medical tourism centre in West Africa.
