President John Dramani Mahama visited the Hohoe Municipality in the Volta Region on Friday, October 2, 2026, to sympathize with victims of a flood disaster that occurred on September 28, 2026. The flood, triggered by a nine-hour torrential downpour, submerged over 400 homes, displacing more than 5,000 residents across seven communities, including Hohoe Zongo. The President presented assorted relief items to the victims at Hohoe Zongo.

According to President Mahama, climate change is leading to extreme weather phenomena, making it difficult to predict weather patterns. He mentioned that continuous rainfall in Togo caused the River Dayi to overflow, flooding low-lying areas of Hohoe, particularly the Zongo and other communities along the river side. The President expressed his condolences to Togbega, the chiefs, and the affected people.

President Mahama disclosed that two of his Ministers, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey and Mr. Kwami Governs Agbodza, had already made donations to the affected victims. Additionally, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) had also provided relief items. The President announced that he had brought more items to donate, which he was leaving in the hands of the Member of Parliament, Municipal Chief Executive, and Regional Minister to distribute fairly.

The President also announced that the owner of Dzata Cement, his younger brother, had promised 5,000 bags of cement to help those whose houses had been destroyed. He acknowledged the efforts of Togbega Gabusu VII, the Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area, the Zongo Chiefs, and other stakeholders who had been involved in the relief efforts.

Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, expressed gratitude to President Mahama for his support during natural disasters in the Region. Togbega Gabusu VII thanked the President for the relief support and his visit to the flood-affected areas, describing it as a demonstration of his fatherly care for the nation.

The flood disaster in Hohoe has brought to the fore the need for sustainable solutions to mitigate the effects of climate change. The President's visit and donation of relief items have provided some respite to the affected communities. The government and other stakeholders are expected to work together to find lasting solutions to the problem.

The President's donation of relief items and his visit to the affected areas have been well-received by the local community. The items are expected to provide some relief to the displaced residents as they work towards recovery. The government has been urged to take proactive measures to prevent similar disasters in the future.
