Residents of Mugamba Ciura village in Mwea, Kirinyaga County, Kenya, are demanding justice following the death of a pregnant woman who was allegedly thrown out of a moving police vehicle. The woman, Catherine Njeri, who was in the company of her husband, died from injuries sustained in the fall. Her husband, Anthony Muturi Mugweru, suffered serious injuries in the incident, which occurred on October 2, 2026.

According to Anthony, their early morning journey to tend to their miraa farm ended in tragedy after they accepted a lift from a police vehicle. He alleges that the officers demanded to be paid some Ksh.1,000 after offering them the ride. The husband recounted that he struggled with the officers, was hit, and lost control of the metal rod he was holding, leading to his fall.

The husband further alleged that the officers in the vehicle also pushed his pregnant wife out of the speeding vehicle, and she died almost instantly. Residents claim that this is not the first time police officers from Wang’uru Police Station have allegedly demanded money from residents in exchange for lifts. A resident, Alfred Mugomi, shared a similar experience where he and others were asked for money after being given a lift.

The incident triggered protests in the area, with police promising a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Central Region Deputy Police Commander David Wambua stated that investigations have begun, and the service seeks to establish the circumstances that led to Catherine’s death. Wambua promised stern and decisive action against those found culpable.

Deputy Police Commander Wambua emphasized that any person found responsible, including the officers involved, would face the full force of the law. He mentioned that the first action would be to interdict the officers if they are found to be culpable in the incident. The body of the deceased was moved to the Embu Hospital Mortuary, while her husband was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
