A recent poll conducted by the University of Ghana's Department of Political Science has predicted that Eugene Boakye Antwi will win the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) General Secretary election. The poll, which surveyed 889 NPP stakeholders, found that 74.2 per cent of respondents expect Mr Boakye Antwi to emerge victorious. The poll was led by Dr Chris Atadika and involved lecturers from the University of Ghana.

The poll also revealed that 657 respondents, representing 74.2 per cent, tipped Mr Boakye Antwi to win the position on October 3. In contrast, 223 respondents, representing 25.1 per cent, expected the incumbent General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, to win, while six respondents, representing 0.7 per cent, tipped Sylvester Tetteh.

When asked to identify their preferred candidate, 76.6 per cent of respondents selected Mr Boakye Antwi, while 23.1 per cent chose Mr Kodua. The poll also found that 60.1 per cent of respondents believed Mr Boakye Antwi could help the NPP win the 2028 general election, compared with 39.2 per cent for Mr Kodua.

The researchers cautioned that the figures represented the expectations of the surveyed respondents and should not be interpreted as an independent prediction of the election outcome. The study further found that respondents considered good communication skills and boldness, ability to help the party secure victory in 2028, and the ability to unite the party among the key characteristics required of the General Secretary.

The three factors attracted 14.3 per cent, 11.3 per cent, and 9.7 per cent of responses respectively. The researchers said there was 100 per cent awareness among the respondents of the General Secretary contest. The NPP is scheduled to elect its national officers on October 3, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

The elections will cover nine national executive positions, including National Chairperson, Vice Chairpersons, General Secretary, National Treasurer, National Organiser, National Women’s Organiser, National Youth Organiser, National Nasara Organiser, and National Communications Director. The party has cleared 47 aspirants to contest the various positions, with four candidates contesting the General Secretary position.

The NPP's National Officers Elections Committee is organising the electoral process, with the Electoral Commission providing supervision. The party is holding the elections as part of preparations towards the 2028 general election.
