The police in Uganda have launched an investigation into the sudden death of popular comedian Yokana Mbuuse, alias Kapere Lufotose. Kapere, 56, collapsed at his daughter's school in Kyimbejja, Wakiso district, on Sunday after complaining of a severe headache. According to eyewitnesses, Kapere was attending a visitation and graduation ceremony at Jolivo Day Care and Junior School with his wife, Lydia Nakandi, and other parents.
Kapere had arrived at the school in a cheerful mood, watching his daughter, Queen, perform on stage. However, moments later, he suddenly fell ill as top-class pupils prepared to cut a cake. He reportedly complained of a severe headache before biting his tongue and collapsing to his knees. His wife, who was holding a baby, panicked as other parents raised the alarm.
Those present laid Kapere on a mat in an attempt to help him, but he barely responded and appeared to be in severe distress. He was rushed to the nearby Zam Zam Clinic, where medical personnel determined that his condition required referral to another facility. Kapere was subsequently taken to Royale Health Services Hospital in Buddo, Wakiso district, where he was pronounced dead at about 5:46pm.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Racheal Kawala, confirmed the incident and said investigations had commenced. She added that a post-mortem examination would be conducted to establish the cause of death. The police are working to determine the circumstances surrounding Kapere's sudden death.
Kapere's wife, Lydia Nakandi, revealed that he had been experiencing financial difficulties and had expressed despair over how he would raise money for rent shortly before collapsing. Kapere rose to fame through the Amarula Family comedy group and later became a familiar face on television through comedy skits on WBS TV's Side Mirror programme.
Kapere was an outspoken supporter of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and regularly participated in the party's activities. His death has drawn tributes from party leaders, supporters, and members of the public. NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu described him as a loyal friend and comrade whose humour helped brighten difficult moments.
Kapere's death has left fans and colleagues mourning a comedian who built his public identity around making people laugh while also establishing a presence in Uganda's political scene. He will be remembered for his distinctive performances and comic character that made him a recognisable figure in Uganda's entertainment industry.
