A counterfeit juice operation was dismantled in Nairobi's Kabete area after an alert member of the public notified the authorities. The operation was based in a homestead in Muthua, Kabete. Acting on the tip-off, detectives from Kabete Police Station moved in quickly and caught two men, Alex Mwaruta and James Munala Inyangala, mid-production. The suspects were arrested at the scene, and a thorough search of the property uncovered a fully functional counterfeiting setup.

The search of the property led to the recovery of a large quantity of suspected fake juice products. Investigators found roughly 1,400 filled 200 ml and 300 ml bottles, 56 cartons of empty bottles, five packets of bottle caps, two blue industrial drums, and three plastic basins. The seized items also included office glue, rubber stamps, ink pads, brand stickers, and an expired Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) standardization mark certificate for a prominent juice brand.

The counterfeiting setup appeared to be sophisticated, with the suspects using unlabelled powdery and liquid chemical substances packed in 50-gram polythene sachets. The substances were likely used to manufacture the counterfeit juice products. Loose 200 ml and 300 ml bottles were also recovered from the scene. Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers processed the premises and logged all recovered materials as official evidence.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has warned that counterfeit beverages produced in unregulated and unhygienic environments can pose serious health risks to consumers. Such operations also undermine legitimate manufacturers and deprive the government of rightful tax revenue. The DCI has confirmed that they are actively tracking down illicit manufacturing networks to eliminate counterfeit goods across the region.

The two suspects, Alex Mwaruta and James Munala Inyangala, are currently in police custody while detectives complete their investigations. The DCI has not disclosed any further details about the suspects or their operation. The recovery of the counterfeit juice products and manufacturing equipment has dealt a significant blow to the illicit operation.

The Kenyan authorities have been cracking down on counterfeit goods in recent years. The DCI has been working to eliminate counterfeit goods across the region, and the busting of the Kabete operation is part of these efforts. The authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

The counterfeit juice products seized in the raid were likely intended for sale in local markets. The DCI has warned that counterfeit goods can have serious consequences for consumers and the economy. The authorities will continue to investigate the suspects and determine the extent of their operation.
