Orlando Pirates and South Africa Under-23 attacker Mpho ‘Phopho’ Padime has endeared himself to Buccaneers supporters with his silky skills in the few appearances he has made so far this season. Padime says dribbling comes naturally to him because that's what he grew up with. Padime may have to adjust his game to fit in with Ouaddou's coaching style. However, the young player says it is going to be difficult to change his style. "I would like to change but some things just happen when I am on the pitch," he said as the SA U-23s prepared for their international friendly matches against Algeria in Bloemfontein this week. Padime's natural ability to dribble has been a highlight of his performances so far.
Padime's upbringing in the township has had a significant influence on his playing style. "I grew up watching that type of football most of the time and not European football," he said. "I grew up in the township where guys dribble and sometimes [showing off] just happens." His background has shaped his approach to the game, and he finds it difficult to change now.
Former Bucs playmaker Relebohile Mofokeng has been an inspiration to Padime. Mofokeng, now impressing at Royal Union Saint Gilloise in Belgium, has given Padime advice and guidance. Padime looks up to Mofokeng and wants to follow in his footsteps. "‘Rele’ is a good guy, he gives me advice every time I talk to him," Padime said.
Padime had a chance to learn from Mofokeng when he was part of the DDC, Pirates' under-23 league team. Mofokeng visited the team before they left for the Netherlands, and Padime sought his advice on how to adapt to a new team. Mofokeng's advice was to work hard and be patient. Padime is now trying to apply this advice to his own career.
Padime has a message for his former amateur teammates who are still playing in township football tournaments. He urges them to be patient and keep working hard, as they have the talent and ability to break into a professional team. "My message to the guys in the township is not to lose hope and they must continue working hard," he said.
Padime is happy with his progress so far and is grateful for the support of those around him. "The last few months have been good and I am happy with progress," he said. "People around me are pushing me to continue working hard and everything will take care of itself."
