The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved the immediate renovation, rehabilitation, and upgrading of all 14 general hospitals across the territory. This move aims to improve healthcare delivery in the nation's capital. The FCT Executive Council, presided over by Minister Nyesom Wike, made this decision at its 19th meeting. The council also directed the resumption and completion of work on the long-abandoned Utako General Hospital.
The renovation of the 14 general hospitals will include the procurement of new medical equipment, diagnostic facilities, and upgraded theatres. This intervention is expected to strengthen the availability of quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare services for FCT residents. The Mandate Secretary, Health Secretariat and Environmental Services, Adedolapo Fasawe, disclosed that the council approved the immediate commencement of renovation, rehabilitation, and upgrading of all general hospitals in the FCT.
The Utako General Hospital, which has remained abandoned for years, is set to get a fresh lease of life. The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed the commencement of work on the hospital, covering construction, equipping, and staffing. Once completed, the hospital will provide much-needed healthcare services to residents. The administration has continued to meet its financial obligations to health insurance providers and Health Maintenance Organisations through the payment of premiums and capitation.
In addition to the healthcare sector, the council approved the digitalisation of about 67 FCT High Courtrooms. This project, covering various judicial divisions, will introduce electronic court recording and case-management systems. The initiative aims to address challenges associated with manual documentation and handwritten records. Implementation is expected to commence immediately, with noticeable improvements targeted within two weeks.
The Education Secretariat secured approval for two contracts for the provision of examination materials for pupils and students in primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary schools across the FCT. This move is part of efforts to consolidate the administration's ongoing transformation of public schools. The provision of examination materials will ensure that examinations are conducted smoothly across FCT public schools.
The Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD) secured approval for a N5.703 billion contract for the construction of a 33KVA power supply line from Dawaki to Tukulo and surrounding villages in Bwari Area Council. The project, awarded to CGC Nigeria Limited, will be completed within eight months. The council also ratified two previously completed and commissioned road projects in the satellite towns.
The FCT Executive Council considered 20 memoranda submitted by various secretariats, departments, and agencies, covering healthcare, education, justice, security, power, land administration, environmental management, and water supply. The approvals are critical to the continued development of infrastructure and improvement of public services in the nation's capital. The council's decisions aim to enhance the overall quality of life for FCT residents.
