Residents and businesses in Pinetown South and surrounding areas have faced unreliable water supplies for about two weeks. The eThekwini Municipality has attributed the ongoing interruptions to water supply curtailments implemented by bulk water supplier uMngeni-uThukela Water at the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works. This has resulted in declining water levels at the Northdene and Shallcross reservoirs. The municipality warned that no restoration timeframe has been confirmed.

The Pinetown South water supply system depends entirely on the Shallcross Reservoir. Falling water levels have placed the entire system under severe strain. The municipality reported that both the Washington Heights and Intake reservoirs are currently empty. Pumping to the affected reservoirs will resume once water levels at Shallcross Reservoir have stabilised and improved. This depends on better inflows from the Southern Aqueduct.

Water tankers have been arranged to provide temporary relief while the municipality monitors the situation. Affected areas include Klaarwater, Phumphele, St Wendolins, parts of Nsizwakazi, Savannah Park Phases 1 and 2, Wiltshire Factories, Regency Park, Latana, Hlanganisa, Gwala Road, Sarjoo Road, Demat, Progress Road, Mawelewele, Intake Road, Luganda, parts of Nagina Township, Khoseleni, Sthundu Hills, Dambuza, parts of Bell Tower Road, parts of Grasmere Road and Mpongo Road.

The municipality apologised for the inconvenience caused by the reduced water flow. Residents can report water-related faults through the eThekwini Municipality mobile app, WhatsApp on 073 148 3477 or the toll-free number 080 311 1111. Reports can also be emailed to [email protected]. The municipality is working to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
