Stellantis has launched a more powerful 2.2 l Peugeot Landtrek double cab bakkie in South Africa, expanding the Landtrek range to seven models. The new variants are powered by a 2.2 l turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, producing 147kW at 3,500rpm and 450Nm from 1,500rpm. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with an electronic gear selector, available in 4x2 or 4x4.

The 2.2 l variants have a higher maximum towing capacity of 3,500kg compared to the 3,000kg of the 1.9s. The Landtrek 2.2D is introduced at the same retail prices as the 1.9s, which remain in the line-up. Stellantis aims to make the Landtrek more competitive in a cutthroat market against rivals such as the GWM P300, JAC T9 Hunter, Foton Tunland, and Nissan Navara.

The Landtrek has been a niche model since its local launch five years ago, moving only 1,307 units in 2025. This is less than half of what the market-leading Toyota Hilux sells in a single month. The low volumes prompted Stellantis to revise its domestic production strategy at its new plant being built in the Eastern Cape.

Initially, the Gqeberha factory was to build only the Landtrek from 2026, but Stellantis intends to build at least two other, as-yet-unnamed models from 2028. This move aims to ensure the plant's long-term viability. The company will reveal more details about the project before the end of the year.

The new Landtrek 4x2 Allure 2.2D is rear-wheel driven, while the 4Action 4x4 has modes for two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, and low range. The 4Action also features an eLocker rear differential and a 360° off-road camera for adventure trails. Both variants come standard with a range of features, including a seven-inch digital instrument cluster and 10-inch Display Audio system.

The 4Action ups the ante with satellite navigation, 18-inch wheels, and a six-speaker audio system. It also features leather seats with electrical adjustment for the front two. Safety features in both variants include six airbags, ABS brakes, parking sensors, and a rear-view camera.

A short test drive at the Gauteng launch in the Landtrek 4Action revealed the new 2.2 diesel engine to be refined and fairly punchy. The dashboard features hard plastic, but the armrests on the doors and centre storage bin are padded for comfort. Prices include a five-year/100,000km warranty and service plan.
