Obi's new position on fuel subsidy contrasts with that of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who announced an end to fuel subsidy payments when he took office on May 29, 2023. Tinubu has maintained that his administration will not reinstate subsidy, instead exploring alternative energy sources to alleviate the hardship caused by rising fuel prices. Obi's stance also differs from his own previous position, which was at odds with Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who has promised to restore fuel subsidy if elected.

Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, the NDC vice-presidential candidate, accompanied Obi to the town hall meeting. Kwankwaso stated that their visit aimed to seek support and cooperation from the people of Sokoto ahead of the 2027 general elections. He noted that the North-West region has become a hotspot for banditry and kidnapping, and that their administration is committed to mitigating these challenges.
The town hall meeting provided an opportunity for residents to hear directly from Obi and Kwankwaso about their plans and vision for the country. The NDC governorship candidate in Sokoto state, Dr. Shamsudeen Haido, pledged to provide good governance if elected in 2027. The state Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bello Yabo, welcomed the meeting, saying it allowed residents to engage with the party's leaders.
