The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has announced plans to introduce a healthcare initiative for retirees in November 2026. This move aims to improve pensioners' welfare and reduce the financial burden of medical care after retirement. According to PenCom's Director-General, Omolola Oloworaran, the initiative addresses healthcare challenges confronting retirees, particularly those whose pension income is insufficient to meet rising medical treatment costs and essential expenses.
A pilot phase of the programme is currently in progress to assess its effectiveness before a wider rollout. Initially scheduled for launch on Thursday, the programme was postponed due to scheduling challenges. Oloworaran assured pensioners that the commission remains committed to introducing the initiative in November. She emphasized that retirement should not leave individuals without the financial and social support needed to maintain a reasonable standard of living after years of service.
Oloworaran highlighted disparities in pension payments, describing situations where retirees with comparable circumstances receive substantially different benefits as an anomaly requiring attention. Addressing such disparities is crucial to ensuring fairness in the pension system and improving beneficiaries' experiences. She encouraged senior citizens to share their experiences and concerns about the pension system with the commission, noting that their feedback would help identify shortcomings and guide improvements in service delivery.
The proposed healthcare initiative is part of broader efforts to strengthen retirement welfare by addressing challenges pensioners face beyond monthly benefits. For many retirees, medical expenses constitute a significant financial concern, particularly when their income is limited and healthcare needs increase with age. The planned programme aims to provide additional support in this area, although details of its coverage and implementation arrangements were not disclosed.
PenCom's Commissioner of Finance, Charles Emukowhate, urged retirees to adopt healthy ageing practices, remain purposeful, and draw on their experience to guide younger generations. He cautioned pensioners against individuals and organisations offering suspicious investment opportunities, particularly schemes promising to double their money or deliver unusually high returns. Emukowhate advised retirees to verify such offers through PenCom and their respective Pension Fund Administrators before making financial commitments.
Emukowhate commended President Bola Tinubu for settling N758 billion in inherited pension liabilities, describing the payment as a significant demonstration of commitment to pension administration. He stressed that effective regulation and oversight remain crucial to safeguarding retirement savings, ensuring pension benefits are paid when due, and strengthening public confidence in the pension system. Protecting pensioners requires not only settling outstanding obligations but also consistently applying regulatory safeguards.
Olutoyin Akande-Ajala, a consultant geriatrician and founder of JBS Gerontology Centre, urged older Nigerians to prioritise their health, maintain independence, and remain physically and socially active throughout retirement. She explained that healthy ageing involves preventing avoidable health problems, managing existing medical conditions effectively, and ensuring that such conditions do not unnecessarily limit an individual's independence. Akande-Ajala encouraged senior citizens to engage in regular physical activity, consume balanced meals, and undergo routine medical examinations to identify potential health problems early.
