Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed relief and joy over the release of 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who were abducted while traveling from Ibadan to their orientation camp in Imo State. The abduction had raised concerns among their families and members of the public. Governor Makinde's reaction came after the confirmation of their release by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

The prospective corps members were reportedly abducted while on their way to the NYSC orientation camp in the South-East. Their release was confirmed by the Olubadan’s Media Aide, Adeola Oloko, following a telephone conversation between the Olubadan and the Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, on Wednesday at about 5 p.m. The development brought an end to days of uncertainty over the safety of the abducted corps members.

Reacting to the release, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said the state government was relieved that the abducted prospective corps members had regained their freedom. He congratulated the Imo and Oyo State governments, as well as the Federal Government, on the safe release of the prospective corps members. Oyelade expressed gratitude that the ordeal of the corps members had ended.

However, Commissioner Oyelade urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to tackle kidnapping and banditry across the country. He stressed that the Federal Government possessed the greatest power and capacity to address the security challenges. Oyelade's statement highlights the need for a more proactive approach to addressing the issue of kidnapping and banditry in Nigeria.

Oyelade further claimed that no fewer than 200 Nigerians were still being held in forests after being abducted in circumstances where, according to him, the government appeared to have no clear knowledge of their whereabouts. This revelation underscores the severity of the kidnapping problem in Nigeria and the need for a more effective response from the authorities.

The release of the prospective corps members has brought relief to their families and ended days of uncertainty over their safety. Details surrounding their release, including whether any arrests were made or ransom was paid, were not immediately disclosed. The families of the corps members can now breathe a sigh of relief.

The incident highlights the need for improved security measures to protect citizens, particularly those traveling to their places of assignment. Governor Makinde's joy over the release of the corps members is shared by many who had been following the developments. The incident also underscores the importance of collaboration between state governments to address security challenges.
