The Oyo State Government has urged parents in Oriire Local Government Area to prioritize their children's education amid efforts to restore normalcy in the area after a recent abduction incident. Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Olusegun Olayiwola, made the appeal during a visit to rescued learners, teachers, and community members at Ahoro Dada. He engaged with stakeholders to ensure the safe return of learners to school. Olayiwola expressed concern over the low turnout of students and encouraged parents to commit to their children's education.
Olayiwola visited Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, where he observed that the school had not resumed for the new academic session. He interacted with parents and children, addressing concerns about children not returning to school and instead engaging in skills-acquisition activities during school hours. The commissioner visited locations where children were learning various skills, encouraging parents to prioritize education. He directed officials to follow up on affected learners and facilitate their return to school to prevent an increase in out-of-school children.
The commissioner also directed the Director of Basic Education to liaise with the Nigerian Baptist Conference on possible interventions to support Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, a private school owned by the Conference. Olayiwola sought the support of traditional institutions in restoring normal educational activities in the community. He paid a courtesy visit to Elesinele of Esiele, Oba Tajudeen Abisoye, who reaffirmed the palace's support for schools and teachers in the area.
During his visit, the Elesinele of Esiele raised concerns over the continued use of the Primary Health Centre by military personnel as accommodation, affecting medical personnel's activities. Olayiwola then visited Ahoro-Esiele Community Grammar School, where he directed the Tutor General to facilitate the posting of additional teachers to address the shortage of Mathematics teachers. The commissioner received an appeal from Parent-Teacher Association teachers seeking consideration for absorption into the Teaching Service Commission.
Olayiwola directed the Tutor General to prepare a submission on engaging interested indigenes of the community willing to teach, for consideration by the Executive Governor of Oyo.
