The Kananga-Kalamba-Mbuji road project in the Democratic Republic of Congo has made considerable progress, according to a recent inspection by Minister of State for Infrastructure and Public Works, John Banza Lunda. The project aims to pave 230 kilometers of road, and so far, over 50 kilometers have reached the foundation layer, which is designed to support the various layers of the road. This development is seen as encouraging, with around 40 kilometers already paved.
During the inspection, which took place on September 20, Minister Banza Lunda evaluated the state of progress of the works, accompanied by Jean-Claude Mido Mbuete and the provincial director of the Agence Congolaise des Grands Travaux (ACGT). According to the ACGT, the overall execution rate of the project is estimated at nearly 22%. The works are ongoing on several fronts, including the construction of drainage structures and the implementation of various road layers.
The project has already had a positive impact on local communities, with villages such as Matamba, Shamatengu, Kadiata, Kambundi, and Mbula-Mbula benefiting from improved connectivity. The road works have reached kilometer post 50, and the foundation layer is being constructed up to kilometer post 60. To ensure the quality of the works, control and surveillance missions regularly carry out technical tests at each execution stage.
The ACGT has reported that the supply of bitumen is currently underway, which will enable the paving operations to continue. The project started on July 3, 2024, and is expected to be completed before 2028. The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, had promised to complete the construction of the road before the end of his term.
Minister Banza Lunda's inspection also included other ongoing projects in the Bandundu region. The minister emphasized the importance of ensuring the quality of the works, with regular technical tests being carried out at each stage of execution. The project is being implemented by the ACGT, with the support of the government.
