The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Osun State has successfully conducted its third-quarter Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) in Akinlalu, benefiting over 200 residents. The medical outreach, held at Akinlalu Secondary Commercial College, was sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Akinyode Abidemi Oyewusi. The initiative aimed to bring basic healthcare services closer to residents in underserved communities.
The health initiative featured a range of services, including medical consultations, health screening, laboratory investigations, pharmaceutical services, and health education. Residents turned out in large numbers to access these services, which were provided by a medical team. The programme commenced with a sensitisation rally through the community, led by NYSC officials, Corps Members, and members of the NYSC Band.
Ahead of the exercise, the NYSC team paid a courtesy visit to the palace of Oba Akinpelu Muhammad Idowu, the traditional ruler of Akinlalu. The team paid homage to the monarch and his entourage, while also creating awareness about the programme. The traditional ruler expressed appreciation to the NYSC and the Deputy Speaker for bringing the health initiative to the community.
The Assistant Director, Community Development Service (CDS), Mr. Christopher Oyedokun, delivered a welcome address to mark the commencement of the programme. The NYSC Osun State Coordinator, Mr. Ekeng Ita Kubiangha, flagged off the medical outreach and appreciated the Deputy Speaker for sponsoring the initiative. He led Oba Akinpelu Muhammad Idowu through the various stages of the screening exercise.
The medical team attended to residents through registration, vital signs assessment, medical consultation, laboratory investigations, and pharmaceutical services. Chiefs, community leaders, and other residents participated in the exercise, which also included health education sessions. These sessions addressed issues such as balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, personal hygiene, hypertension, and mental health.
Residents were encouraged to avoid prolonged sitting and incorporate simple physical activities, particularly walking, into their daily routines. Chief Lekan Obishakin commended the community for its support and appreciated the Deputy Speaker for sponsoring the outreach. He urged residents to continue promoting peace, upholding good character, and remaining committed to the values of their community.
The outreach underscored the NYSC's commitment to community development and its role in complementing healthcare efforts. The initiative improved access to basic health services, particularly for residents in rural communities. Hon. Akinyode Abidemi Oyewusi appreciated the people of Akinlalu for their support and urged them to make good use of the medical services provided, emphasising the importance of regular health checks.
