Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouli chaired a meeting on September 27, 2026, to review the executive status of the Greater Cairo Greening project. The project aims to increase green spaces and convert vacant areas into green spaces. The meeting was attended by Dr. Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Environment, Engineer Randa El-Manshawi, Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, and Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo.
During the meeting, Dr. Madbouli emphasized the importance of preparing a model for tree planting and greenery along main roads and in various governorate cities. He highlighted the need to choose tree species that are suitable for environmental and climatic conditions and have low water consumption rates. The Prime Minister also stressed the need to expand the use of treated wastewater for irrigation.
Engineer Randa El-Manshawi stated that there is a focus on planting and greening main roads and side streets, with programs in place for continuous maintenance and care. She mentioned that plans are underway to establish public gardens on large areas in several new cities, including a large garden and artificial lake in the New Cairo town.
Consultants presented proposed designs for a Nile garden to be built on land in the new urban community in Waraq Island. The designs include open green spaces, seating areas, pedestrian paths, and bike paths. The meeting also reviewed preparations for the operation of the "Telal Al-Fustat" garden.
Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo, presented a proposed plan for the greening of Greater Cairo. He stated that the plan aims to improve the quality of life, enhance environmental sustainability, and increase green spaces. The Governor emphasized that the plan is not limited to increasing the number of trees or green spaces but rather aims to create a comprehensive system for greenery and urban planning.
The Governor added that the plan takes into account efficient water use, reducing long-term operation and maintenance costs, and reusing vacant and unutilized areas. He stressed that the ultimate goal of the plan is to transition from viewing greenery as a decorative element to considering it an essential part of Cairo's environmental and cultural infrastructure.
Consultants emphasized that the project relies on sustainable solutions that consider Cairo's climate, efficient water consumption, and ease of maintenance. They stated that the project aims to enhance the environmental value, improve the visual and aesthetic scene, and upgrade the experience of users of public spaces. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of implementing the project's various stages according to the specified timelines and coordinating with concerned parties.
