A training session was held in Yei River County, Central Equatoria State, for over 20 representatives from civil society organisations, security institutions, media houses, and other stakeholders. Buga Alex, Coordinator of UJOSS Central Equatoria State Branch, highlighted the importance of the training in enhancing participants' knowledge of cybercrime and cybersecurity.
Participants included journalists from media houses in Yei, civil society representatives, security personnel, and other stakeholders. Archangelo Modi, Chairman of Civil Society Organisations in Yei, urged civil society groups and security institutions to maintain neutrality and work together throughout the electoral process. Modi also emphasised the role of the media in informing the public and holding authorities accountable.
Modi called for greater support for the media and protection of journalists' access to information. He said a strong media sector could contribute to creating a better environment for investment by providing reliable information about developments and opportunities in South Sudan. This, he believed, would help to promote economic growth and stability in the country.
One of the participants, Medina Adigess, said the training had improved their understanding of cybersecurity, cybercrime, and the role of the media in society. Adigess noted that the knowledge gained would help participants better understand the responsibilities of media institutions and the importance of responsible information sharing. This, in turn, would promote a more informed and engaged citizenry.
UJOSS said the training was intended to encourage informed participation, strengthen cooperation among key stakeholders, and contribute to a peaceful and credible electoral process in the Greater Yei area. The organisation hopes that the training will have a positive impact on the electoral process and help to promote stability and security in the region. The training is part of UJOSS's efforts to support the development of a free and independent media in South Sudan.
