Outgoing Eskom Board Chair Mteto Nyati has expressed his optimism that South Africa will not return to load shedding. He acknowledged that the costs cannot be removed overnight and that renegotiating contracts, particularly those linked to coal, will take time. The company aims to achieve R112 billion in cost savings over the next five years, with executives having already delivered and exceeded the target for the first year.
Nyati emphasized the importance of rooting out corruption within Eskom, its suppliers, and those dealing with the company. He stated that corruption is largely responsible for the company's current situation and that it is the board's responsibility to address this issue. Nyati assured South Africans that efforts are being made to prevent future instances of corruption and to mitigate the impact of cost increases.
