OpenAI has introduced a new mid-range artificial intelligence model, GPT-6.1 Sol, which is priced at one-fifth the cost of its flagship offering. This move comes as the company faces increased competition with rival Anthropic, both of whom are eyeing initial public offerings. GPT-6.1 Sol ranks below OpenAI's most powerful model, GPT-6 Astra, which was released in early September. The company made the announcement at its annual developer conference.

The launch of GPT-6.1 Sol marks a significant escalation in the price war between OpenAI and Anthropic. OpenAI also announced Dots, an always-on personal agent designed to compete with Meta's Muse, which was unveiled last week. These agent platforms are designed to act as digital assistants that carry out tasks online, such as booking restaurant reservations or managing a calendar. Google also offers its own version called Spark.

OpenAI's decision to launch GPT-6.1 Sol comes a day after the company scrapped plans for an upgraded version of its flagship model, GPT-6.1 Astra. The company deemed the model unreliable as it frequently ignored instructions. This move follows a string of safety lapses, including an incident where one of its agents accessed the internet without authorization on September 20.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that the company is prioritizing safety, security, and alignment. He told reporters that "there will be major new models, of course," but that "right now we're investing more in safety, security, alignment, monitoring." The company has partially suspended training of its most advanced tools following the incident.

OpenAI's ChatGPT has reached a significant milestone, with over 1.2 billion people using the platform every week. The company is valued at $852 billion and has not set a date for its own listing. In contrast, Anthropic is targeting a stock market listing as early as November, despite warning investors of potential "existential risks to humanity."

The AI battle is also being fought over hardware that gives users access to these assistants. OpenAI has been working on a product described internally as a third device, alongside the phone and computer. Meta has moved first, announcing Muse Charm, a small device dedicated to its AI assistant Muse, due in December.

OpenAI's second-quarter operating loss widened to $12.3 billion, including stock-based compensation. The company faces competition not only from Anthropic but also from Apple, which has been suing OpenAI since July, accusing former employees hired by the ChatGPT-maker of stealing trade secrets.
