Oman successfully rescued 25 sailors from a merchant ship that caught fire after being targeted in an attack. The Omani Maritime Security Centre reported that the evacuation operation was carried out for the crew members of the Panamanian-flagged ship RITI. The crew received medical care, but details of their condition were not provided. The ship was described as a crude oil tanker by the Marine Traffic ship-tracking website.
The incident occurred as Iran continues to restrict maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway that carries about a fifth of global oil. The strait has become a focal point of the conflict in the Middle East, which escalated on 28 February with US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Iranian forces have regularly targeted ships passing through the strait, leading to increased tensions in the region.
The US Central Command reported that it had successfully cleared the strait's internationally recognised primary transit routes of Iranian sea mines. US forces remain present in the region to ensure that all primary transit routes in the Strait of Hormuz remain free and clear. The US has helped Gulf countries export more than 1.5 billion barrels of crude via the strait since summer, according to US Central Command chief Brad Cooper.
A separate incident was reported by the British maritime security agency UKMTO, which stated that a ship 40 nautical miles south of Lavan island in Iran was struck by an unknown projectile, causing a fire onboard. The crew of the vessel was reported safe, and there was no reported environmental impact. The incident highlighted the ongoing risks to shipping in the region.
Iran's Revolutionary Guards reported that three oil tankers were halted after encountering unspecified incidents or hitting mines while attempting to pass through an unauthorised route in the Strait of Hormuz. The Guards stated that the tankers had switched off their navigation and positioning systems and were trying to exit through the unauthorised route with the support of the US military.
The Iranian incidents occurred as the country demands that vessels use a designated route through the strait and coordinate their passage with the country's armed forces. A southern corridor closer to Oman's shores has been labelled unauthorised by Iran. The US has responded to Iran's blockade of the strait with a counterblockade of Iranian ports, further restricting Tehran's ability to export oil and conduct trade.
The Strait of Hormuz has become a critical point in the conflict, with both Iran and the US taking measures to assert their control over the waterway. The incidents have raised concerns about the safety of shipping in the region and the potential for further escalation. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East.
