Olam Agri Ghana has made a significant contribution to the upcoming 42nd National Farmers’ Day celebration by donating GH¢100,000. The donation was presented to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) in Accra on Monday, September 28. This gesture is part of Olam Agri's efforts to support the annual celebration, which aims to honour farmers for their vital contribution to Ghana's economy and food security.
The Country Head of Olam Agri Ghana, Bhaibhav Biswas, emphasized the importance of recognizing farmers' efforts, describing them as the backbone of the economy. He noted that their work is critical to ensuring food security and reducing the country's dependence on imports. Biswas also highlighted Olam Agri's long-standing commitment to supporting farmers in Ghana through various initiatives aimed at improving yields and efficiency.
Olam Agri has been operating in Ghana for about 35 years, engaging in various businesses including cocoa, cashew, rice, flour processing, pasta, tomato paste, and biscuit production. The company has worked closely with local farmers, providing them with support in areas such as access to fertiliser, processing, and distribution. This experience has underscored the significance of farmers' contributions to national development.
The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, received the donation on behalf of the government and Ghanaian farmers, expressing gratitude to Olam Agri and other partners supporting the celebration. He emphasized that Farmers' Day is an important occasion to recognize the hard work of farmers, whose labour sustains the country and contributes to food production and exports.
The 2026 celebration is particularly significant, as it comes after a challenging period for farmers, including the Akosombo spillage and drought in northern Ghana in 2024. Minister Opoku noted that measures under the government's Feed Ghana Programme have since led to increased production of some major crops, such as maize, which reached over 4.6 million tonnes in 2025.
Despite increased production, Minister Opoku acknowledged that farmers face challenges, particularly when there are inadequate processing and off-taking arrangements, resulting in lower farm-gate prices. To address this, the government has introduced measures to make farming a more attractive and profitable enterprise, especially for young people.
The 2026 National Best Farmer will receive a cash prize of GH¢1.2 million to support the construction of a three-bedroom house, in addition to a new four-wheel-drive pickup, a tractor with accessories, and agricultural inputs. The Minister also invited Olam Agri to participate in the Farmers' Day celebration in Sunyani by exhibiting its products and showcasing its contribution to Ghana's agricultural sector.
