Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has expressed support for the economic reforms implemented by President Bola Tinubu's administration, urging Nigerians to remain patient as the government works to stabilize the economy. Okpebholo stated that the reforms, although difficult and accompanied by economic pressures, would eventually position Nigeria for improved economic conditions and development. He made these comments during the "Operation Rescue Benin-Asaba Road" event in Edo State.
Okpebholo used an aircraft illustration to describe Nigeria's current economic stage, comparing it to the take-off period of a flight. He explained that passengers do not immediately receive expected services during take-off because safety procedures must be completed before the aircraft reaches its cruising level. The governor stated that Nigeria would soon reach its cruising level, where the economy would be more stable.
The governor acknowledged that the reforms were difficult but necessary to reposition the economy. He emphasized that Nigerians should understand that current economic difficulties are part of a transition that would eventually lead to a more stable economy. Okpebholo's comments come amid concerns over the cost of living, petrol prices, and the impact of the Federal Government's economic policies following the removal of the petrol subsidy.
Okpebholo compared petrol prices in Nigeria to those in the United Kingdom, stating that he recently traveled to London and observed the price of petrol. After conversion to naira, he claimed the price amounted to "about 3,000-something" per litre. The governor used this comparison to argue that Nigerians were paying less for petrol than motorists in the UK.
Beyond the economy, Okpebholo highlighted infrastructure development, specifically referencing road construction projects across the country, including the use of concrete pavement on major roads. He made these remarks while speaking at an event focused on the Benin-Asaba Road, a major route linking Edo State with Delta State.
Okpebholo expressed support for Tinubu's continued presidency ahead of the 2027 general elections, questioning those already preparing to challenge the President. He referenced a statement attributed to the Oba of Benin, saying, "You don't change a working President." Okpebholo maintained that the reforms would eventually deliver better economic conditions and urged Nigerians to remain patient with the administration.
The governor assured that Edo State would remain stable and properly managed beyond the current administration. He stated that even when Tinubu leaves office, whoever succeeds him would find Edo State in a safe hand, and Nigeria would also be in a safe hand.
