The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 43-year-old man, Edebiri Temitope, who allegedly killed his neighbor, Micheal Oje, 38, for hugging his 3-year-old son in Bluestone Treasure Estate, Mowe-Ofada area of Ogun State. According to reports, the incident occurred on August 26. The police confirmed that the suspect was arrested and transferred to the State CID, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
The deceased, Micheal Oje, a Guidance and Counselling graduate of Benue State University, was accused of hugging and playing rough with the 3-year-old child. Peter Adum, a younger cousin to the deceased, stated that Micheal had just returned from work and the child, who lived with them on the same street, ran towards him and hugged him. Micheal hugged the boy and threw him playfully in the air and caught him, before going into his room to sleep.
Adum claimed that Edebiri, the father of the boy, came outside and knocked on Micheal's door, accusing him of playing roughly with his child. Micheal explained that he had only hugged the boy and lifted him into the air. However, Edebiri started slapping Micheal, picked up a bamboo stick from the ground, and hit him about three times. Micheal fell and died on the spot.
The suspect was reported to have gone into hiding with his family after the incident. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the suspect had been arrested. Babaseyi stated that Edebiri Temitope, who was earlier reported to be at large, has been arrested in connection with the death of Oje Michael Eje.
The police have transferred the suspect to the State CID, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation. The incident has raised concerns about the increasing rate of violent crimes in the area. Residents are calling for increased security measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
Micheal Oje's death has left his family and friends in shock. His cousin, Peter Adum, described Micheal as a kind and gentle person who would not harm anyone. The family is demanding justice for Micheal's death and calling for the police to take severe action against the suspect.
