The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Ogun State and the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have agreed to strengthen their collaboration in the fight against drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking. This agreement was reached during a courtesy visit by the executive members of the Correspondents’ Chapel to the NDLEA command in Abeokuta. The partnership aims to enhance public awareness and prevent substance abuse across the state.
The Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Yetunde Fatungase, commended the NDLEA for its efforts in combating drug abuse and trafficking. She noted that the agency’s operations have significantly contributed to protecting vulnerable individuals and safeguarding young people from substance abuse. Fatungase emphasized that tackling drug abuse requires a collective effort and that security agencies need the support of relevant institutions and stakeholders.
Fatungase highlighted the crucial role of the media in supporting anti-drug campaigns through public enlightenment, educational programs, and sustained advocacy. She assured the NDLEA commander that members of the Correspondents’ Chapel are committed to responsible and impactful reporting that exposes the dangers of illicit drugs and promotes awareness about the agency’s achievements.
The Ogun State NDLEA Commander, Tijjani Rabe, commended the chapel for initiating the visit and described the media as an indispensable partner in the fight against drug abuse. Rabe stressed that enforcement activities alone are not enough to eliminate substance abuse and that sustained public awareness and preventive education are necessary.
Rabe emphasized the need to take drug prevention messages to households, schools, and communities to address the problem at its roots. He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to the proposed partnership and assured the journalists of an open-door policy, pledging to provide timely and accurate information to support their reports.
Both parties expressed their commitment to sustained engagement and a stronger media-driven campaign against drug abuse across Ogun State. The media practitioners were encouraged to use their platforms to expose drug trafficking networks, educate the public on the dangers of substance abuse, and advocate for community-based rehabilitation for people struggling with addiction.
The partnership between the NDLEA and the Correspondents’ Chapel is expected to enhance the fight against drug abuse and trafficking in Ogun State. The collaboration will help to promote a safer society and protect vulnerable individuals from substance abuse. Key initiatives will include public awareness campaigns, educational programs, and sustained advocacy against drug abuse.
