A group of Ogun State indigenes residing in Enugu State recently held a reception for Hajia Yemi Sowunmi-Kolapo, the PDP Deputy Governorship Candidate. The event was a show of support for the PDP and its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections. The group, led by Dr. Lekan Oladapo, expressed their commitment to protecting their heritage and installing good governance in Ogun State. They praised the PDP governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, and his running mate for their manifesto, which they believe is genuinely committed to the progress of the state and the wellbeing of its people.
According to Dr. Oladapo, Ogun State is not living up to its potential, despite being a special state that has produced Presidents, first-class brains, and professionals in various fields. He noted that the state is far behind where it should be, and it is time for a change. The group vowed to join the struggle to protect their heritage and install good governance in Ogun State, which they believe is in the interest of their people and future generations. They also expressed concern that the state may be captured by those who do not have its best interests at heart if the people do not rise up to protect their heritage.
Dr. Oladapo further stated that Ogun State has ancient towns like Ijebu Ode and Abeokuta, which can be leveraged for tourism and revenue generation. However, he noted that there is no deliberate effort to do so, and the state is not close to the desired level of development across sectors, including infrastructure. He cited the example of herbal health, where Ogun State can earn foreign currency from the export of herbal products, but lacks a government with the goodwill and capacity to implement such policies.
The group Chairman also mentioned that the elite of Ogun State can no longer be deceived, and many of them in other parts of the country and in the diaspora have realized the need for a change that would move the state forward. He urged their people at home not to be afraid but to come out and vote en-masse for the future of their children. Many of their people have transferred their voter cards or done fresh registration in their home state, and they plan to mobilize heavily and sensitize their communities to vote for the PDP in the 2027 elections.
Dr. Oladapo praised Kolapo, saying that her antecedents and integrity make her the most suitable running mate for Adebutu. He noted that the PDP did not make a mistake in bringing her on board to add value to the ticket. Kolapo, in her response, thanked the group for their show of love and support for the PDP and its candidates. She assured them that all pledges and promises made during the campaigns would be fulfilled.
Kolapo highlighted the antecedents of the Adebutu family, noting that they have been empowering the people of Ogun State without being in government. She expressed her confidence that the people will be better off under Ladi Adebutu as Governor, citing his compassion and will to make a change. She also urged the people not to relent in the build-up to the 2027 general elections and to tell those they have control over to come out and vote out pain.
